Hey everyone,
Enigma is a band that needs no introduction. If you were a teenager or older in the late 90s or early noughts, you’d have definitely heard the timeless track Sadeness. The track had heavy Gregorian vibes, with mingled French and Latin lyrics.
If you remember the music video, a monk wanders through a dreamscape of ruins and happens upon a gigantic stone doorway. The door has intricately carved details, including the embossing of a woman in the throes of, what appears to be, pain.
The narrator proceeds to give a tongue-lashing to the dreaming monk in French, but the monk surrenders to curiosity (and possibly lust) and opens the door.
His eyes go wide with fear, and he turns away and runs as fast as his feet can carry him. But he is sucked into the void beyond the door. The monk then wakes from the door and we hear the closing verse in Latin: In nomine Christi, Amen.
On The Gate, Elisabeth Houghton recites astronomical data about the planet Mars as the tension builds.
Closest approach to Earth
34, 600, 000 miles
Mean distance from the sun
141, 600, 000 miles
Finally, the track gives way to O Fortuna. If you hear this track for the first time, you are in for a real treat!
If you haven’t listened to much of Enigma before, I would wholeheartedly recommend LSD: Love, Sensuality, Devotion to get started.
See you tomorrow!
-Nikhil.
