Let's grow your newsletter together
I'm offering my copywriting and strategy consulting services.
Hi folks,
I don’t like blatant self-promotion, but more and more people in my copywriting circles tell me that I should dial back my modesty by 37.5% (maybe more) and market myself boldly.
Like a cup of Maxwell House coffee.
Anyway.
An introduction
For the past five years, I was a medical copywriter. I wrote or repurposed copy from established scientific journals, helped doctors get accurate, updated information about pharma products, and turned in reports about conferences on rare diseases. In February 2022, I realized I wasn’t happy doing that anymore. I left my job and started soul searching. In a carpe diem moment of creativity, I took one day to come up with the title, logo, and brand colors for ‘What’s Curation?’ Now, one day shy of six months, this newsletter has a growing loyal readership and is in the top 100 newsletters on Substack for music.
I knew writing was in my veins, but I finally knew its name: creative copywriting.
The road from nowhere to the top 100 in the music genre
It all started with a vision for freeing people from the clutches of AI algorithms. The world has so much to offer, so why limit yourself to the Daily Mixes Spotify gives you? Why trust Apple Music’s alleged curation of “Tracks on Tracks”? So, I started offering my own diverse selections—and we’ve covered music from all genres, in 13+ languages so far.
But the process can get repetitive— a song a day? So, I started talking about the music from my own life: the songs from my college days, the tracks my dorm mates made me listen to, and the memorable soundtracks from television shows I still remember to this day. I made a bold move into writing serious essays centered around poignant music: on losing a colleague in an accident, the importance of legacy, and our insignificance in the ever-expanding cosmos. I expected some folks wouldn’t enjoy it.
Instead, my open rates shot up like Mentos in Coke. I started ranking on the Substack leaderboard.
And that made me happier than words could describe. As a copywriter, that was an awesome problem to have.
Helping others during Office Hours
Readers who don’t have a newsletter here on Substack wouldn’t know this, but there’s a two-hour block of time every week where Substack creators would talk about their problems and I would religiously type up walls of text to answer.
People noticed and started saying nice things:
The lightbulb moment 💡
The eureka moment came to me last week. I’m a writer who has built an engaged, vibrant audience from all over the world, from all professions and age groups, and where the feedback is positive and consistent.
Why can’t I help people with ideas for their posts? Walk them through building a content calendar. Think about marketing ideas and tips for building an audience and engaging with them.
So, I’m announcing my freelance services for your newsletter or blog regardless of the subject matter. We can together discover how to write:
In a tone of voice that’s uniquely yours!
Attractive, genuine headlines that spark curiosity (no clickbait crap!)
A simple, yet effective “About” page for your newsletter
Consistent content creation strategies when you’re plumb out of ideas
Emails that will bond you with your readers, gradually improve engagement and paid conversion over the long run (or when you decide to go paid)
Let’s get on a free, 20-min discovery call to say hello and see if we are a good fit. If you want to work together, we’ll discuss hourly prices (that are fair) and take it from there on Google Meet. Click the link below and block my Calendly calendar.
State of the Newsletter #6 tomorrow. Wow, what a ride we’re on!
Best wishes.
Nikhil.
Keep on climbing, man!
