My whole childhood was a lie

A good writer stays clear of hyperbole. But every once in a blue moon, when the orbits of Venus and Mercury align, a writer is allowed one extraordinarily cheesy and over-the-top headline.

I just discovered that this track, which I had always associated with Natalie, is actually a cover.

In 1993, Anne Preven, a member of the band called Ednaswap co-authored the song with producers Scott Cutler and Phil Thornalley.

Strangely enough, the song was recorded for the first time by Danish singer Lis Sørensen as Brændt (Transl: Burned).

Then Ednaswap themselves released a version of Torn in 1995 on their eponymous debut album. It had a rock/grunge vibe to it and the lines felt accusatory. Anne Preven’s delivery was terse and her voice husky. This version of Torn felt like a bad breakup from her point of view.
