Hey folks,
The days are surely getting shorter here in Toronto, and the sun is now setting at 5 pm.
If you’ve lived near the equator for most of your life, you’ll be used to the usual 6 pm sunset and the lingering light; that ethereal twilight glow before the ushering of darkness. You usually have dinner within 2 hours of sunset and are ready to snuggle under the covers within 4 hours (unless you’re an owl). You check your social media for one last dopamine hit, and it’s off to La-La land.
Wintertime in North America is a different story. It’s dark by 5.30 pm. Your stomach starts making funny gurgling noises, and so you hurry into the kitchen to make dinner or reheat leftovers. You rinse the dishes, take out the trash, make some tea, and settle in, thinking it’s time to go to bed. But to your horror, the clock says 8 pm.
Now, you have three hours to kill, but your body is ready to crash. And the worst bit is that the sunrise gets later and the sunset gets earlier as the year comes to a close. I’ve been here 2 years and it still hits pretty hard.
So, I thought a bit of cheery pop would help. Purity Ring is a pop band from Edmonton, Canada. Addictive, down-tempo dream pop that’s bound for multiple listens. Have a great weekend, get some sleep, and I’ll see you all here on Monday for a guest post from a friend who’s enjoying summer this time of the year.
-Nikhil.

This track, a lullaby to be played on an endless loop all day.
Must be tough in places like Scandinavia. On one of my winter trips to Holland, I was at a conference in a hotel under Schiphol airport. For 3 days, I caught a train in the dark from my uncle's home in the dark, and got back at night in the dark. I didn't see sunlight for 3 days. I hate to think what it does to people who live like that. On the other hand in summer, daylight is fading at 11pm. Then like your example NIkhil, people go from eating early in winter to eating at 8 or 9 pm.
