Thanks so much, Ryan. To be honest, I was meaning to do a long-form post like you do and I think the inspiration rubbed off! Thanks for reading, and for recommending this newsletter to your readers.
Great story. I grew up on Asimov and other classic SciFi writers, like Philip K Dick who were so far ahead of their time, that you almost wonder if they had visited their futures.
My challenge is that I often waste time completing a not very good book, because I have invested time in getting a certain way in, and I have paid for the book. At least eBooks are cheaper than their paper counterparts.
You remember that Hindi song I shared the other day from the bad movie with guns? I should have run away at intermission, but I stayed and tortured myself. Sometimes, the sunken cost fallacy can have devastating effects on you, haha!
We are kindred souls in many ways! I, too, flunked out of graduate school in a spectacular way. I, too, have dreams of being back on campus, unprepared, and marginalized because everyone but me knows I am going to fail.
I too had lost my writing hand and when I found it again I realized that my brain missed its loyalty: the thinking arm. When I write my brain exhales its many patterns, be it poem, program, or proposal. Reflection rejoices: sitting and simply thinking is too serial; writing gives my nonlinear metaphorical mind its deserved voice.
Young Nikhil knows that writing is fun. Older Nikhil frets that time is precious. Present Nikhil discovers that writing is precious and that time is fun. I look forward to your newly rewired writing, wherever the commas!
This is brilliant. You are brilliant. I love both young and current Nikhil. Please pat yourself on the back for me and give yourself a hug in the process. ❤️
Obrigado, my friend! It was the perfect mix of angst, anger, sadness and motivation. I've been listening to the album on repeat (aha!!). Can't wait to see what goodies you have in store for your Sunday edition.
You can be proud of this piece Grown Up Nikhil. Really enjoyed it. And there is no way Kid Nikhil could have written it.

Maybe sometimes we need to experience trash so that we don't take great writing for granted. :)

Will you be my pen pal?
Sure! I have pens, paper, and postage!
And excellent penmanship. :)
Inspiring post Nikhil!

Thank you and to the Zoom gang, Sara! Please share this if you’d like.
Arranging Enid Blyton books 👏
They were hardback copies and they had an indent on the front cover, close to the spine. You could leave a pencil in that indent!
Great essay, and even better song! I wasn't familiar with this band and now I can't wait to listen to the whole album!
