That's awesome! 'Parachutes' was actually one of the first albums I've bought on vinyl :D Not a big fan of their current style, but I'm still planning to pick up A Rush Of Blood too at some point.
Yes! So glad to see someone else who thinks the same! Mylo Xyloto ended my love affair with Coldplay. Not a diss on the band or their creative direction, but just personal preference. The world lost a great emo pop/rock band.
Better late than never, Nikhil! Congratulations on your first time! Did you feel a little naughty? Now, you're finally ready for some vinyl jokes: "I once had an album by Oral Roberts, but I couldn't get it to play." "Really? Why not?" " The hole in the middle kept healing up."
Make sure you get that oldie but goodie record (alas, written in the days of land line phones): "I Can't Get Over You, Babe, So Answer the Phone Yourself."
Oh, and the big hit in the '40s, "June is Busting Out All Over, So June Better Get a Bigger Dress!"
And, you're not gonna wanna miss, "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?".
Amaze your friends and surprise your family with this one: How many grooves are on your standard 12" vinyl record album? Just one, otherwise, the tonearm wouldn't be able to make its inevitable rendezvous with the label in the center.
Echoing Kevin, I'll say, "Welcome to the Vinyl Club!" If I had a Jethro Tull t-shirt I once saw at a Tull concert once, I'd send it to you: "Which One's Jethro?"
Most, if not all of those puns/jokes were from (and in memory of) dear ole Dad, he of the 20,000 LPs and 78s (mostly jazz 'n' big band), housed in custom-made, floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall cabinetry while my bro and I were growing up from the mid-'50s thru early '70s, miraculously missing out on contracting PVC poisoning!
I remember, he once had the tiniest record I'd ever seen (be fun to see what it might be worth, now)....it was about 3" in diameter, with a small LP spindle-hole in the center....I forget the song and artist, but it was released in the '40s, I believe, and on Decca Records (or, as Dad used to call 'em, "Decay Records")!
BTW, there are many Facebook groups that focus on the vinyl format (and collectors of) you could slap your article onto. Go nuts. There's "45 rpm collectors (the little black circle)"---that's the group's name. I bet they'd enjoy your experience (and reading about it.
"Seven Decades of Pop That Goes Crunch" and "Turntable and Record Enthusiasts" are a couple others. I bet if you did a FB search on "vinyl" and/or "vinyl collectors," you'd find more, not to mention hitting Reddit for similar searches!
Granted, a lot of the FB groups are focused on the MUSIC on vinyl, but again, your story is so unique and endearing that even FB groups, say, focused solely on the music held on a slab of polyvinylchloride would/should find your discovery well worth reading about and celebrating.
Don't be shy....the worst that could happen is a group admin doesn't accept your submission. It's happened dozens, if not hundreds, of times to me (a fact which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone)!
One of my favourite albums of all time. I used to play my guitar along with the record at least once a week. Love that album. I have an original vinyl copy still.
I still have a tiny record player and a handful of cherished albums and wish I had kept more. There's nothing like it. Look forward to hearing about more of your discoveries!

Thank you, Oleg!

Play on, Nikhil...............play on!🎼🎵🎧🥁🎷🎺🎸🎹👍
Thanks for the welcome, Brad! Oh those puns! Now, I better appreciate Mitchell Stirling’s Substack’s name (bulb lighting up moment).
Forward this post to a vinyl fan and let me know what they think!

You're the undisputed king of Substack marketing (conventional or otherwise) 👑
I do what I can. I guess I'll consider that a feather in my....uh, crown. Thanks.
Welcome to the party! 😎
Hand me that beer, Kevin! Let's party!

As a Gen Xer who grew up listening to vinyl, this brings a smile to my face! :)
I’m a millennial who missed the boat!
I still have a tiny record player and a handful of cherished albums and wish I had kept more. There's nothing like it. Look forward to hearing about more of your discoveries!
Oof, that song gets me right in the heart.
Regarding moving from cassettes to CDs, vinyl preceded it all, of course.
So glad you got to experience the anachronism that I grew up with. :)
Reminds me of the time a Gen Z kid looked at a floppy drive and asked why someone 3D printed the "Save" icon.
😂
Congratulations on both! You’re like the Billboard Top 100 now.
PS: I have been “curating” my attic this summer and recently stumbled on a 78 RPM vinyl record by George Shearing.
That sounds like fun! Attics are like time capsules in some ways!
